A subcommittee in the Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce is working on a project to improve the bike trail system within the City, and this week it will be promoted with a kick-off event.
On Friday, the “Kinnick to Raccoon” trail improvement planning committee will host an event to introduce the public to the project. Committee member Rebecca Hillmer says there are four primary aspects of the plan, including: lighting the old railroad bridge over the Raccoon River; landscaping the four blocks between the river and the trailhead at Nile Kinnick Drive; participating in the “Shadow of the Rails” art project already in place in Waukee, Perry, and other locations; and lighting the bridge approach on the eastern side of the river. Hillmer says the purpose of the event on Friday is to finally unveil “Kinnick to Raccoon” to the public. “It’s primarily an event to showcase the project and explain what we are doing and what everything is involved. We will also at that time accept donations, but that’s not the premier reason for doing it. We just want to get the word out and let people know.”
Hillmer adds, the funding target for the project is $125,000. The committee has already raised around $50,000, which is before they’ve even taken it to the public, so Hillmer is confident they will get all the funds needed to get it done. The kick-off event will run from 4-7 p.m. at Brickyard Burgers and Brews, located on the west side of Adel along the Raccoon River Valley Trail.
