Dallas County Conservation is looking for help from the public in maintaining one of their most popular parks, as they are hosting a Voas Stewardship Day tomorrow morning.
The event will involve clearing the overgrown oak savanna habitat at the Voas Nature Area near Minburn. The work done by volunteers will expand the work currently in progress on clearing the understory at the site. Attendees will be using hand saws and loppers to clear honeysuckle, dogwood, and other small trees to help the larger “wolf” oaks flourish in the area. Conservation Outreach Coordinator Ken Keffer says the stewardship day is a great opportunity for people to positively help wildlife in a way that has a more lasting impact than picking up trash, though he also emphasizes that the latter is still important.
The Voas Stewardship Day will be held tomorrow from 9 a.m. – noon. There is no cost to attend, though registration is required. For more information or to sign up, contact Forest Park Museum at 515-465-3577.
