The Perry School District has joined with the Perry Kiwanis Club to recognize one student each month.

The Student of the Month program was started last September. Kiwanis member Jeremy Winter says it was the perfect marriage of their organization wanting to do something special for students, and the District wanting to give recognition to students that went above and beyond. Winter says each month the teachers and staff at Perry High School nominate a handful of students, and one from that list is chosen by a committee. The honorees so far include: Natalie Martinez in September; Angela Hernandez in October; Kaden Boyer in November; Adriana Eastman in December; Kaleb Olejniczak in January; and Sarah Vaughn in February.

Winter says the Student of the Month isn’t solely an academic honor, as it also recognizes everything a student has done to make the school better. “What I like about it is, it’s not just like the kids who got the best grades that month. It’s a lot of looking at the other stuff that doesn’t go noticed. You know, kids who were volunteering for stuff, the kids who were helping out in the hallways, being a good person at school. It’s not just the straight-A students, it’s kids who are doing all this other stuff that often goes unnoticed that we’re trying to reward them. So it’s a cool program, and we’re glad to be doing it.”

The Perry Student of the Month is announced on the Kiwanis and Perry School Facebook pages. Winter says each awardee receives a certificate to commemorate the occasion, as well as a gift card to Casey’s General Store.
