The Greene County High School track & field teams had a number of fine performances on Saturday at the Buena Vista University Elite High School Meet on Saturday inside the Siebens Center, but Carter Morton’s high jump performance was one to talk about. The junior entered this season with a personal best of 6′ 2″. In the first indoor meet on March 5, Morton topped that by clearing 6′ 4″ and finishing second in a field numbering well over 100 at the A.D. Dickinson Relays inside the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. On Saturday, he again shattered his previous best by clearing the bar at 6′ 7″, winning the event, setting a meet record by 1-1/2″ inches, and automatically qualifying for the high school boys’ high jump at the 2019 Drake Relays in Des Moines on Thursday, April 25. The Drake Relays automatic standard for that event is 6′ 6″. Morton is the Greene County HS record holder in the high jump and now he’s just one inch behind 2004 Jefferson-Scranton graduate Keith Pedersen, who is the Ram program’s all-time record holder in the high jump at 6′ 8″.

Morton had company in the winner’s circle at BVU as fellow junior Colby Kafer won the long jump at 20′ 4-1/2″, one of the few times in his career he’s topped 20 feet, and the first time he’s done it indoors. Junior John Rosado was sixth at 18′ 8″ and freshman Bryce Stalder placed eighth at 18′ 0″.

Junior Tyler Miller was second in the shot put at 47′ 11″. He’s set personal bests in both meets indoors and bettered his UNI-Dome mark by 3-1/2 feet. Other top eight place finishes for Greene County in the 22-team meet was a fifth from Morton in the 60 meter hurdles in 9.46 seconds; fifth by Kafer in the 60 meter dash in 7.49 seconds; fifth in the 4 x 400 meter relay in 3:45.08 with junior Brent Riley, sophomore Jaxon Warnke, junior Tyler Teeples, and Kafer.

The Rams are back at it tomorrow inside the Lied Recreation Center on the Iowa State University campus.
