A charge against a former Jefferson City Council member has been dropped.

According to court documents, District Court Judge Joseph McCarville granted a request from Greene County Attorney Thomas Laehn to dismiss the Class D Felony for extortion against 77-year-old Larry Teeples. Court documents show the reason for the dismissal was that it would be in the best interest of justice.

The dismissal comes after Teeples’ resignation from City Council last week. The charge stemmed from an incident on January 2nd when Teeples allegedly confronted Jefferson Police Chief Mark Clouse at the law enforcement center about a traffic stop that involved his grandchild. He then made statements that he wouldn’t support the police department as a councilman unless they left his grandchild alone.

Teeples has been on the Council since 1995. At tonight’s City Council meeting, the Council will be discussing how to fill Teeples’ seat. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
