There are a few classes coming with at the Greene County Community Center in Jefferson.
Third through sixth graders are invited to participate in the Pre-Sous Chefs Camp with Hy-Vee on March 18th and 19th from 2:30 to 4pm. A Hy-Vee cook will teach basic nutrition and kitchen safety and participants will make a food item. They will be doing as much of the prep work and baking as their age permits. Cost of each class is $10. Participants are encouraged to not wear loose clothing and those with long hair must have it tied back.
The next three classes are centered around canines. Linn Price will teach a dog obedience class on Tuesdays from March 19th through April 30th from 6:30 to 7:30pm. Dogs will learn basic commands such as sit, stay, heal and come. Cost is $60 which includes a training collar. There will not be a class on March 26th and no dogs are needed for the first class. An Independent Study is for those dogs that are graduates of the obedience class and will work on interacting with other dogs. The time and dates are the same as the obedience class and the cost is $3 per class. Finally, there is a Tricks and Treats class that will also be on the same night as the obedience class but from 7:30 to 8pm. Cost is $30 and it will teach dogs special tricks and tasks like for canines for who needed as service animals.
Jefferson Parks and Recreation Director Vicky Lautner talks about the community center being diversified to allow for a variety of different kinds of programs.
“We like to give people the opportunity to come into the rec center. The dog obedience, we used to do out at the 4-H building and we talked to Linn and decided to take it to the rec center because the dogs need to be around people and it was a good excuse to do that. The Pre-Sous Chefs is an opportunity to teach children things other than exercising all the time. Eating is part of fitness (and) walking your dog is part of fitness. We just think it’s important just to do as many things as possible at the rec center.”
