Weather continues to be a chief concern for the construction of the new Dallas County Law Enforcement Center, though Sheriff Chad Leonard says contractors continue to work on what they can.

The month of February was unkind to the progress of the facility, and Leonard says it’s forced crews to work a little bit out of order. As a result, he says the first two sections of the building are nearly complete, while little work has been done on the jail portion. “For the most part, the main building for the administration and the jail support, those things are getting pretty buttoned up. (We’re) waiting for some windows and doors to come in and those things. And again on the front part of that building, the sheetrock and all that stuff is already on the walls, and (we’re) getting some finishing done on that. So it’s really just going to be that really tricky part in the back, the jail pod itself, where you have a mezzanine level and getting all those things will be a tough job.”

As far as the money being spent on the project is concerned, the Samuels Group reports that about 55% of the $23.9 million allocated to build the facility has been spent, including $572,830.34 with the most recent pay application. There’s also around $600,000 currently in the contingency funds, which the Samuels Group says is well above where they would have expected it to be at this point in construction. The estimated completion date has been pushed back to late October or early November of this year, but the construction managers are hopeful that with some good weather the contractors can kick the progress into overdrive.
