Saturday was a day to celebrate women in Perry, as there were two separate but related events held at La Poste.

In the morning, the building was filled with people attending the annual International Women’s Day Coffee event. In addition to refreshments, there were speeches given by seven different women on a wide variety of topics. Founder of the Perry observation of the holiday, Carol Cavanaugh, said it was exciting to see how much the event has grown since it started in her living room in 2016. The festivities continued in the evening with a concert featuring the musical talents of several different women of all different ages.

Cavanaugh felt the weather may have stood in the way of more people coming to the “Women Rock La Poste” event, though she still thought it and the morning celebration were well received. “I think there’s a connection with women around Perry, Iowa, and Iowa, and (the) U.S.A. and stuff, that sometimes we really enjoy being together and celebrating. So I think it’s been really fun. The music tonight is fantastic, I wish more people would have come out. (There’s) really a lot of talent here, so I’m thrilled and very happy.”

Cavanaugh added, she was very pleased with the turnout for the morning event, as there were around 140 women and men in attendance. She said that next year they’ll probably have to look into providing more seating to accommodate the ever increasing number of attendees.
