It may not look like it yet but the high school spring sports season is finally here.
After the inaugural season, the Greene County School District is continuing to offer boys and girls soccer. And due to the grassroots efforts from fundraising and volunteer coaches, the School Board recently approved to pay the coaching staff. Superintendent Tim Christensen explains the reasons why the Board felt it necessary to pay coaches going into this season.
“You can’t sustain, or you shouldn’t sustain a program through volunteers, and donations, and fundraising. Moving forward, the Board did approve to take additional funding that we have from a sharing agreement we have with Paton-Churdan to actually pay a head coach for boys and girls and paying an assistant coach for boys and girls.”
The payment is $3,413 for six units for each of the two head coaching positions and $2,275 for four units for each of the assistant coaches. The total cost to the district with transportation and officials was $20,700. Christensen adds that the Board reviews all sports programs on an ongoing basis each school year.
Boys soccer practice starts today and girls will be next week.
