Two Guthrie Center residents were honored for their commitment to the betterment of their community at the Main Street Iowa Awards Celebration last Friday.

Main Street Guthrie Center Director Dana Buster nominated Becky Carico and Pat Sleister to be recognized as volunteers of the year at the statewide event held in Des Moines. Carico and Sleister organized bringing the Smithsonian Institute’s “Hometown Teams” exhibit to the Mary J. Barnett Memorial Library last summer. Buster says that was just some of the volunteer work the two do for the Guthrie Center community, “They put so much of their time and energy into not just that particular program, but they’re both on our beautification committee so they also work on keeping the downtown looking great. And they worked on the art project getting our art piece put into the Dowd Drug pocket park there.”

Main Street Jefferson was also recognized Friday for reaching the $5 million benchmark of local investment as well as hosting the Smithsonian Institute exhibit. Main Street Guthrie Center has four committees that help serve the community, and they are looking for new volunteers and new ideas for what people want to see in Guthrie Center. If you would like to volunteer, stop by Buster’s office located at Guthrie Center Communications, or contact her at mainstreetgc@netins.net or 641-332-2674.
