Not often has the Greene County High School boys’ track & field squad had a second place finisher at one of the big one class indoor meets, but that was the case on Tuesday of this week. Junior Carter Morton was the high jump runner-up, clearing a personal best 6′ 4″ in a field of well over 100 jumpers. Morton’s Dad, Chad, is the head coach of the Rams. Carter is a two-time State qualifier who placed eleventh at the Class 2A State meet last May.
Carter Morton was asked is he changed his jumping mechanics a lot since last season or if it was more of a refinement. “More of a refinement. I lifted weights a lot and that really helped me. I think it’s gotten me more explosive off the ground. Going to camps helps a lot, as does all the offseason stuff.” Since her previous personal best was 6′ 2″, he was asked what’s ahead. “I think I can get 6′ 5″ before Drake, which should be good (to qualify), but I don’t know about 6′ 6″. I thought 6′ 4″ was going to be a lot, and I topped that by two inches, so I guess anything can happen.”
The Rams next indoor meet is set for Saturday, March 16 inside the Siebens Center on the Buena Vista University campus in Storm Lake.
