A bill is being debated on the U.S. House floor this week that addresses campaign finance, voting rights, and ethics reform.
The House Rules Committee approved along party lines the “For the People Act of 2019,” or HR 1. Congresswoman for Iowa’s Third District, Cindy Axne (D), introduced two amendments to the bill that would prohibit current and former members of Congress from serving as lobbyists and prohibit members of Congress from using taxpayer dollars for first-class airline travel. Axne comments on the bill, “So we’ll be bringing that bill to the floor this week and it really is a bill that ensures that we protect our democracy, that every single person has a voice for their vote in this country. That we reduce the role of dark, special interest money in politics and make it easier for people, not harder to vote. So those are some of the key premises behind that particular bill.”
Axne added that she doesn’t want Congressmen and women to “cash in” on their legislative work to become lobbyists, and she wants to make sure taxpayer dollars are used wisely instead of on first-class travel. The House is expected to vote on HR 1 Friday.
