With last weekend’s mix of precipitation and sustained cold temperatures much of Guthrie County’s sidewalks and pavement are covered with ice, making slips and falls a danger.
Guthrie County Hospital Physical Therapist Jessica Carney urges people, especially the elderly, to be careful around slick pavement. She recommends wearing shoes with good traction, using handrails when applicable, taking small steps, and being mindful of people around you. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state one out of five falls cause a serious injury, and falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries. The CDC also says a fear of falling can cause a decrease in physical activity, in turn making people weaker and increasing their chances of falling. Carney says people can be active inside this winter by doing exercises inside your home, or walking inside public buildings with friends.
