A pair of 2019 qualifiers for next week’s Class 3A Boys State Basketball tournament in Des Moines were conference foes of the Adel-Desoto-Minburn Tigers this winter. Monday saw Raccoon River Conference members Ballard (15-9 overall) and Winterset (16-6 overall) punch their ticket to final eight and ADM topped both teams once this regular season. ADM delivered Ballard their first loss of the winter, 69-54, in Adel on November 30. Bomber senior Chase Winterboer nailed five first-quarter threes as Ballard upset top-seeded Pella, 73-57, Monday night at Southeast Polk High School. The Tigers handed rival Winterset their second loss of the season, 63-48, in Madison County on December 7. Huskies senior Casey Kleemeier scored a team-best 21 points including the go-ahead three-point basket to help Winterset top Denison-Schleswig at Atlantic High School, 51-48. Ballard is making their first state tournament appearance since 2005 while Winterset is playing in the elite eight for the first time since 1987. ADM saw their season end in the Class 3A Substate 7 semifinals on February 21, falling to the Gilbert Tigers, 60-54.
