Proposed legislation that has been discussed over the last decade is popping up once again in the current general assembly, with a new bill to ban the use of traffic cameras set to come before the Iowa Senate.
The bill was drafted by Senator Brad Zaun, (R) District 20, and will be floor managed by Senator Jake Chapman, (R) District 10. Chapman says he’s excited to take the legislation through the process, and believes it will garner the needed support this time around. He explains the background of the proposed traffic camera ban. “This is a question as to whether or not Iowans are truly receiving due process, the ability to face your accuser. And I’ve seen some statistics here recently, where Cedar Rapids took their cameras down for a period of time, and accidents were down. So these really aren’t about safety, this is about money. It always has been. So I am going to be very aggressive in making sure we can ban these outright.”
Chapman adds, there is a companion bill in the Iowa House that seeks to more closely regulate traffic camera enforcement, but he and Zaun feel that isn’t enough, so they are rolling with the bill to completely prohibit the cameras. The bill is out of subcommittee, and should be discussed on the floor in the coming weeks.
