With several more inches of snowfall coming later tonight and into tomorrow, it’s a good time to go over some reminders to be prepared in case you get stranded on the side of the road.
Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams says there are a couple of ways to help them find your location if your vehicle is stuck on the side of the road, including using your cellphone.
“With today’s technology with cell phones, just make sure your GPS is turned on. And then when you call 911 we can usually get within 300 yards of your location, which will help us find you a whole lot easier. Otherwise, just make sure you know if you’re leaving Jefferson and you’re heading east and you haven’t made it to (Grand) Junction, that kind of stuff, it just gives us a general area to start looking.”
Greene County Public Health Director Becky Wolf says it’s also a good idea to pack an emergency kit with blankets, bottled water, non-perishable food items, jumper cables, kitty litter, extra clothes, a flashlight and a phone charger.
“The other thing is make sure you keep your gas tank full because if you get stranded or stuck, you’re going to need to be able to stay warm. If you do get stuck, the best thing-especially if you’re in a blizzard or whatever-stay with your vehicle. We always have stories of people walking off and then they die of hypothermia because they get blinded and lost.”
The National Weather Service is projecting another six to eight inches of snow for the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area. For those in non-emergency situations, contact the law enforcement center at 386-2136.
