Kids in Guthrie County may be enjoying all the snow days they’ve received so far this winter, but that will likely push summer break further away as school districts make up for missed time.
The Panorama School District has so far lost six days of school due to weather, and the last day of school has now been pushed from Tuesday, May 28th to Tuesday, June 4th. Seniors can rejoice though, as their last day stays at its intended date of May 15th.
Superintendent Shawn Holloway shares how cancelled school has affected the staff’s morale, “It gets to the point where it’s just frustrating I think for people. I had one of our teachers kind of describe it the other day as, ‘When you get started on something on a Monday and Tuesday and then you miss school Wednesday and Thursday and then you come back on Friday, really you’re probably going back all the way to Monday to try to figure out where things are at.’ And so I think it’s just hard to build momentum within your classes.”
The added school days account for the teacher’s state requirement of having 180 student contact days, though Panorama follows an hour requirement instead for how much students must attend school. The state minimum is 1,080 hours, and Panorama currently has an excess of 71.5, which Holloway says is to account for potential two-hour delays and other uses. The district has also decided to move the end of their third term from March 22nd to March 29th. Last school year Panorama had only two weather-related school cancellations, and in the year prior there were none.
