The Panorama girls basketball team came into Monday night’s Class 2A Region 7 final just one win away from back-to-back appearances at the state tournament in Des Moines. The wait for another shot at a state title will be a long one, as the Panthers suffered their largest defeat in nearly a decade with a 15-50 result against state-bound Dike-New Hartford.
The two teams traded small leads early, but the Wolverines dominated the majority of the game, outscoring Panorama 48-12 after trailing by one in the opening quarter. Wolverine senior Katie Knock led all scores with 16 points, while juniors Ellie Foster and Morgan Weber chipped in 13 and 11 respectively.
Panorama senior Lydia Knapp led all Panthers with five points. Classmates Bailey Beckman and Morgan Johnk, as well as junior Anna Holloway, each had three points. Senior Brooke Halterman added an extra point from the free-throw line to give Panorama their 15. Johnk also twisted her right ankle late in the third quarter, adding injury to the struggling performance for Class 2A’s #6 ranked team.
Six seniors played their last game for Panorama, including: Beckman, Johnk, Knapp, Halterman, Vallerie Storesund, and Jaelyn Waddle. Beckman exits as the leading scorer in program history and the team finishes with a record of 22-2.
