The ACGC boys basketball team opened their 2019 postseason play in Stuart Wednesday night as they matched up with the Mount Ayr Raiders. Unfortunately for the Chargers, the Raiders continued their perfect record away from Mount Ayr with a 67-40 victory.
Mount Ayr led the entire game pushing a ten-point lead at the end of the first quarter to 17 at the end of the half. Mount Ayr juniors Dawson Frost and Isaac Grose each had 17 points to lead all scores. Frost added to his offensive output with back-to-back buzzer beaters at the end of the first and second quarters. Sophomore Payton Weehler also chipped in 15 in the win.
ACGC freshman Miles Kading led all Chargers with 11 points while junior Bryce Littler became the first Charger to reach 300 in a single season, finishing with ten points on the game and 303 for the year. Five ACGC seniors played their final basketball game for the gold and black. Noah Nelsen finishes with a career record for steals, while Noah Sargent finishes with a single-season record 38 completed three-pointers. Will Byars, Mike Ure, and Spencer Grove also played their final basketball games for ACGC.
Following the game, Nelsen shared his thoughts on playing in the opening years of the ACGC basketball program. “It’s just been an honor just joining schools in the past three years, having a great group of guys there, and it’s just been the best time to play with them. It’s been quite the honor.”
The Chargers finish with a record of 6-16.
