Tom Quinlan, the former owner of the KDLS radio station and a well-known Perry resident, passed away Monday.
The 94-year-old was an anchor and co-owner of the Perry radio station for 50 years before retiring and selling KDLS in 2005. Seven years later the station was purchased by current owners, M&H Broadcasting, who brought it into the Raccoon Valley Radio Network. Quinlan had spent the last six years of his life as a resident at Perry Lutheran Home’s Spring Valley campus.
He is remembered fondly by his former co-workers and employees, including current Raccoon Valley Radio Sports Director Shawn Kenney. “He was such a craft at his profession, you know I would go around the town and everybody knew Tom Quinlan’s voice. He was the voice of everything Perry for so many years, and he brought so much to this community. And really he was a radio star in this town, but when you got to know him one-on-one, his personality just won you over and he became a great friend. And I’m going to miss him, I know the community is going to miss him, and I know this community owes him so much for what he did, serving this town like he did for so many years.”
Funeral services for Quinlan will be held this Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Perry, and burial will be in the Violet Hill Cemetery. There will also be a visitation on Friday at 3 p.m. at Murdock Funeral Home in Perry, with the family present from 5-6:30, followed by a time of remembrance with family and friends.
