This weekend’s Class 2A District 1 tournament featured various individual accomplishments for Adel-Desoto-Minburn Tigers senior wrestler Andrew Flora. Flora, Class 2A’s No. 1 grappler at 126 pounds, qualified for his fourth straight Iowa High School Athletic Association’s State Wrestling tournament after winning both matches of the district tournament held in Adel. His 14-4 major decision win in the championship bout against Gilbert’s Carter Ihle gave Flora the 161st victory of his high school career, surpassing 2015 graduate Keegan Mumma for first place on the all-time career wins list at ADM. Flora shared with the Raccoon Valley Radio Network that it’s really cool having the milestone victory come during his final district tournament appearance at home. “I was hoping to beat (the record) sooner but with all the cancellations of our duals and tournaments, (today) was a good time for it to fit in there.” Flora said, “It’s really cool. I couldn’t have done it without my coaches and teammates, my mom and dad, but it’s a really cool honor that’s for sure.”
Flora enters this week’s state wrestling tournament with an unblemished 35-0 record. Joining Flora at the 2019 Iowa High School Atheltic Association’s State Wrestling tournament is senior Nolan Harsh (182) and junior Kaden Sutton (220). Harsh is making his fourth appearance at Wells Fargo in as many years after winning his district championship match by fall against Ballard’s Mason Askelsen. Sutton returns to state after a runner up finish in his weight class. He lost by a 13-6 decision in the championship match at the No. 1 rated grappler, Woodward-Granger junior Cody Fisher. The 2019 Iowa High School Athletic Association’s State Wrestling tournament begins Thursday, February 14 and lasts through Saturday, February 16, from Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
