The State Large Group Speech competition was held last Saturday, and a team from Perry performed well enough to be selected for All-State.

Perry’s reader’s theater team received three “I” ratings by the judges at West Des Moines – Valley High School, as well as an All-State recommendation. They will not be performing, though Assistant Speech Coach Allisa Bahney says that doesn’t matter in the scope of being chosen. “It’s very, very difficult to get to All-State, in fact I don’t even really know how to get to All-State! But anytime we take someone there, it’s always a huge honor, whether they’re performing or non-performing. Not many kids get to go to All-State, and it’s a big deal. They get honored there, they get recognized, and then they get recognized further in the media, and they get their picture hung up in the school. So it’s all a big deal, and it’s pretty cool!”

The piece is called “Inside a Teen Mind,” and was written by Perry Head Speech Coach Wendy Bollhoefer. It features students Camden Studer, Rylynn Gilmore, Kayla McFarland, and Madison Mason. Bahney says she’s proud of the hard work each of the state participants put into their contest entries, even though only one team will represent the school at All-State. Meanwhile, Adel-DeSoto-Minburn didn’t have an entry selected to All-State, breaking a run of two years in a row. In spite of that, ADM Speech Coach Jacque Seidl says she was proud of the growth the team showed, especially in the face of adversity in the form of several missed practices because of the weather.

The All-State Festival will be held Saturday, February 16th at Iowa State University. See below for a full list of results from the State Speech Contest for Perry and ADM.
