Across the state of Iowa we’ve seen a lot of recent snowfall on a consistent basis.

It’s been a different looking landscape than how the winter season started out for the state. However, Weatherology Meteorologist Megan Mulford says it all depends on where you are in the state, especially during the last two major snowstorms.

“Across kind of the northern (and) western parts of the state we’re seeing maybe two, three, and four inches below average (snowfall). But actually if you head more toward the eastern side of Iowa into Illinois it’s more like eight, nine, and ten inches above average.”

She explains how we’ve been getting these recent major snowstorms to come across our state.

“When you get lows out of the Rockies or in the Southwestern parts of the United States, they are packed with a lot of moisture. So that’s when you get your heavy, you’re wet snow, kind of really hard to shovel. Usually if you live in kind of the northern part of the Midwest you have what we call those clipper systems and that’s usually brings just light snow and it’s more powdery. So really it’s just the positions of the lows and where they have been coming from.”
