The Greene County High School Music Department invites everyone to their annual Pops Concert on Thursday.

It will be at the high school auditorium at 7:30pm. The free concert will include the concert band, along with the treble choir, mixed choir, the combined choirs and jazz choir. Choir Director David Heupel says other than the jazz choir, the Jazzatonics, performing their contest pieces, all other songs will have a theme of “A Tribute to Queen!” The concert band will perform “Fat Bottomed Girls,” “We Are the Champions,” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The treble choir will sing “Somebody to Love,” the mixed choir will perform “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” and the combined choir will sing “You’re My Best Friend” and “Don’t Stop Me Now.”

Earlier this week the Jazzatonics earned a Division I-rating at the Iowa High School Music Association State Jazz Choir Festival for an eighth straight year. The jazz choir group continues their stretch of festivals and competitions this Friday with a trip to Cedar Rapids Washington High School for the Mo-Sho Festival. Heupel says he feels comfortable with the music selections for the jazz choir group, after much deliberation this season. He explains his thought process on how he chooses music for them.

“It could be something where I don’t think we could quite get over the hump to get that down, or it might be something where I think, ‘Well we’ll have this learned in two rehearsals.’ And then there’s nowhere to grow on it after that. So trying to find that middle ground and really knowing the group (is what it is about). One of our pieces is a little easier, which kind of balances out with our closer which is a little tougher.”

The Jazzatonics will perform “One in a Million,” “Nature Boy,” and “I Could Only Whisper Your Name” at both the concert on Thursday and at Friday’s festival.
