This past Saturday’s sectional wrestling tournament was extra special for West Central Valley senior Cole Sackett. Not only did he leave Guthrie Center as the top seed of the 152-pound bracket from the Class 1A Section 3 tournament, but he also recorded his 100th career win in the process. Sackett’s journey to 100 wins came with three different head coaches in his four-year grappling career. On Monday’s Wahl McAtee Tire and Service Center Guthrie County PM Sports Page, West Central Valley first-year head wrestling coach Ben Strandberg spoke about coaching Sackett to his milestone win. “I’m just glad I got to be a part of that, and help him get to that milestone,” Strandberg said, “We knew it was coming, we’ve had a lot of weather (impact regular season events), so it was nice to get that achievement done at sectionals.

Sacket is one of four West Central Valley wrestlers to advance to this weekend’s district tournament. The Wildcat grapplers joining him in Truro Saturday are junior Justin Garcia (126), senior Carson Wadle (195) and junior Rush Rowan (285). The top two grapplers from each weight class this weekend punch their ticket to the 2019 Iowa State Wrestling tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines starting February 14. The Class 1A District 2 tournament begins at noon Saturday from Interstate 35 High.
