As cases of Influenza are now widespread across Iowa, Guthrie County Public Health reminds residents of what they should do to prevent spreading the flu at home, work, or in public areas.

Public Health Director Jotham Arber says most flu viruses are spread by droplets made when people cough, sneeze, or talk. Those droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or be inhaled into their lungs. The flu can also be transmitted through surfaces and objects and touching your face. People with the flu are most contagious in the first three to four days after their illness begins, and symptoms can show two days after the virus enters the body. Arber urges those with flu symptoms to stay home until at least 24 hours after your fever is gone, unless to get medical care or other necessities. Other ways to contain the spread of the flu include covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, washing your hands often, and cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and objects.
