The final domino has fallen in the case of the death of 16-year-old Sabrina Ray of Perry, as her adoptive cousin, 22-year-old Josie Bousman, was sentenced to up to 14 years in prison this afternoon.

Bousman had reached a plea agreement with the State of Iowa to amended charges related to the May 12, 2017 death of Sabrina. Per the agreement, she pleaded guilty to a class C felony for neglect of a dependent person, and two counts of child endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor. Bousman was originally charged with five counts, the most serious being three counts of aiding and abetting first degree kidnapping, a class A felony. The amended charges include a 10 year maximum sentence for the class C felony, and two years each for the misdemeanors.

The defense and prosecution had arranged a joint sentencing agreement, and Bousman will serve the sentences consecutively, though she will get credit for the 21 months already served at the Dallas County Jail. She is also eligible for parole. Bousman had been cooperative with the investigation since the beginning, even agreeing to testify against the other four defendants. However, her testimony was never required since none of them were tried by a jury. The court costs and surcharges against Bousman were suspended, though she will be forced to pay an undetermined amount of victim restitution.

Bousman’s sentencing brings the case of Sabrina’s death to a close, nearly two years after it happened. Sabrina was found dead in the home of her adoptive parents, Marc and Misty Ray of Perry, having suffered from severe malnutrition.
