The high school wrestling regular season for the Greene County Rams is over. First year head coach Zach Beekman’s team is looking ahead to the Class 2A Sectional Tournament in Ida Grove starting at 12 p.m. on Feb. 2, the first step in the postseason. The first and second place teams advance to Feb. 5 dual meet regional tournaments, while the first and second place individuals in each of the 14 weight classes will move on to the Feb. 9 District Tournament in Harlan. The top two individuals in their weight class at the district level, advance to the State Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines Feb. 14-16.
Greene County did not have anyone qualify for the 2018 State Tournament, the first time in 29 years that happened. On paper, State qualification for the Rams doesn’t appear to be a given this year either, although the Rams have some possibilities. There are nine wrestlers ranked in the top 10 by The Predicament that are from schools in the same Sectional as the Rams. Sergeant Bluff-Luton has three, all ranked fifth or higher, Atlantic, and Harlan each have two ranked wrestlers, and Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) and the host OABCIG Falcons, have one apiece. The Rams are the only program among the six teams in the Ida Grove Sectional without someone ranked in the top 10. That being said, eight Rams have records well above the .500 mark, led by senior Brock Wueber with a 22-2 mark at 170 lbs.
The Ida Grove and Creston sectionals combine for the district meet at Harlan. There are also nine wrestlers in the Creston Sectional ranked in the top 10, and all nine are ranked eighth or higher.
