It’s been almost a century since a certain bird resided in the City of Casey, and he will be making a return this week for the sesquicentennial.
State Historical Society Curator Leo Landis will be escorting the preserved famous Red Cross Rooster Jack Pershing back to Casey where he will be auctioned off for the local food pantry. Residents are asked to come to Rolling Hills Bank in Casey at 11 a.m. Wednesday to welcome “Jack” for the celebration and start its fundraising efforts.
Jack was owned by Casey auctioneer D. R. Jones and together they went town to town, raising money for the Red Cross during World War I. He would be auctioned off, given back and then auctioned off again. He eventually passed away and was preserved through taxidermy and donated to the State Historical Society where he was on display for many years in its museum.
