Last week was the first week for the newly elected District 47 Iowa House Representative Phil Thompson.

The Jefferson native says his first week was in a word “craziness” following his swearing in, which he did on a stack of his family’s Bibles, to being appointed to four standing committees including local government, state government, labor and veterans affairs. He also is the vice-chair of a budget sub-committee of Rebuild Iowa’s Infrastructure Fund (RIIF) of transportation, infrastructure and capital committee. Thompson points out one of his biggest highlights of the week was witnessing the first female governor, Kim Reynolds, being sworn into office.

“I mean I won’t lie to you I really did tear up during her Oath of Office. It was a lot of hard work. I’m extremely proud of our governor. She really did it with hardwork and perseverance. It was really, really cool to be present for that.”

Another highlight was hearing Greene County and Jefferson mentioned in Reynolds’ Condition of the State Address as part of her focus on rural development.

“Yeah that was awesome. She’s making rural development a priority and she’s seeing a lot of the good things that we’re doing in Jefferson and making that a big shining example of what can be done.”
