A dismal fourth-quarter output diminished three-quarters worth of good play last Tuesday for the West Central Valley Wildcats varsity girls basketball team (3-9 overall). The Wildcats entered last Tuesday’s final quarter with the Ogden Bulldogs leading by a score of 38-26. West Central Valley was outscored 22-4 in the last quarter, falling to the Bulldogs, 48-42. The Raccoon Valley Radio Network spoke with West Central Valley head girls basketball coach Drew Stonewall on last night’s Wahl McAtee Tire and Service Center Guthrie County PM Sports Page. He says last week’s outcome with Ogden was tough to swallow. “I think we had a 14 point lead midway through the third quarter and at that point, the wheels fell off,” Stonewall said, “(We had) a lot of turnovers down the stretch, we stopped making shots, we stopped rebounding and playing defense. We did some really good things for the first 20 to 22 minutes of the game.”
Stonewall added the team made six three-point baskets and the squad was sharing the ball well before things unraveled in the final 12 minutes. The loss to the Bulldogs is West Central Valley’s sixth conference loss by seven points or less. The Wildcats have another chance to redeem themselves tonight when the Woodward-Granger Hawks come to Stuart for another conference contest. The Lady Hawks edged the Wildcats in overtime, 48-42, in Granger on December 7. The varsity doubleheader between West Central Valley and Woodward-Granger starts with the girls’ contest around 6 p.m. and the boys’ game to follow from West Central Valley High School in Stuart.
