McCreary Rec Center

For much of 2018, the City of Perry had been working on the replacement of the roof on the McCreary Community Building, and at the most recent City Council meeting the project was officially wrapped up.

The Council approved the final pay request of $5,718.13 from Central States Roofing to cover the release of retainage. Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson says the City was pleased with how the project turned out, and points out that the roof’s completion opens the door to further work at the rec center. “So we did this roof project in two phases, and the second phase was completed this fall. And so (the) McCreary Center has a brand new roof (which) should be good for about another 15 years. So (we’re) happy to have that project done and behind us, and that was kind of the first step to be able to move inside and take care of some major mechanical and cosmetic things that we want to do in there.”

Peterson adds that like the roof, most of the work that needs to be done currently on the McCreary Center is for aspects that no one sees. However, he says they are things people would notice if they stopped working, such as the boilers and chillers in the facility. Once the infrastructure is complete, Peterson says the City can then look into more visible upgrades, like the ones proposed in the recent parks and recreation master plan submitted by SVPA Architects and the Iowa State University Community and Regional Planning studio class.
