The staff of Perry Lutheran Homes is preparing for their trip down to Jacmel, Haiti to put the finishing touches on a new elder care facility they’ve helped build there.
Director of Development Wanda Pritzel says one of the primary aspects of the new facility will be its connection to the neighboring orphanage, which she says will resemble the work done in the Acorns and Oaks intergenerational daycare. “The intergenerational involvement between those children and the elders who live at Perry Lutheran Homes’ Willis Campus, including those with mid to late-stage dementia, is pretty amazing and pretty powerful. We want to take that same concept and encourage intergenerational involvement between the orphans who already live in the orphanage, there are 34 of them, and the elders who will be coming into their brand new home right next door. Neither have any family, we want to help them find ways to be family to each other.”
Pritzel adds, PLH will be connecting the facility in Jacmel with the ones in Perry thanks to a Zoom Link live feed, which will allow all the residents and children to interact with each other. She also says the children at Acorns and Oaks are creating art for the PLH staff to take to the orphans, and will then bring the orphans’ creations back for the kids at the daycare.
