The Greene County School Board met Wednesday for a work session on sportsmanship.

The workshop was led by Iowa High School Athletic Association Assistant Director Todd Tharp. He spoke about the four different roles people have during any athletic competition from being: a coach, fan, athlete or an official. He said it’s impossible to be all four roles and when someone tries to take on two roles, that’s when concerns start to happen.

Tharp explained the five core values of a fan include: respect, responsibility, integrity,  sportsmanship and servant leadership. He said as a fan you need to know the rules of the game, be respectful of coaches, players and officials and show servant leadership by picking up after yourself.

Tharp also showed a rating system that the IHSAA uses for officials as part of their evaluation process and allows the officials to participate in postseason contests. He said officials get to rate the coaches, athletes, student and adult fans of each contest they officiate using a 1 to 4 scale, with 1 being excellent and 4 being unacceptable. Following the 2018 football season, Greene County School District received an average score of 2.02 for coaches, 2.16 for athletes, 1.42 for student fans and 1.49 for adult fans. The average for the state ranged between 1.25 to 1.45.

Tharp also suggested having a parent meeting before each sport begins to set out all expectations, when practice schedules are and other rules for the athletes to follow.
