As the late muzzleloader and archery deer hunting seasons continue through January 10th, hunters are reminded of the charitable contribution they can make in Guthrie County.
Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officer Jeremy King explains how hunters can help reduce the Iowa deer population and provide high-quality protein to Iowans in need, “There’s a great program put on through the Iowa DNR called HUSH, which stands for Help Us Stop Hunger. And that is any hunter that harvests a deer can take it to, gutted that is, take it to lockers around the state and the DNR basically pays the bill to have that deer cut up and turned into burger and donated to needy families that are in need of that.”
Hunters can donate their legally taken deer to the Bagley Locker. The meat then gets ground into two-pound packages of venison that is distributed to families in need through the Food Bank of Iowa. In 2017, each participating locker received $75 for each processed deer. To learn more about HUSH click here.
