The ACGC boys basketball team welcomed their rivals to the north Thursday night for a non-conference contest against the Coon Rapids-Bayard Crusaders. Despite setting the scoring record at CR-B, senior Ben Obert and the Crusaders couldn’t overcome ACGC’s teamwork as the gold and black pulled away to win 65-53.
Senior Noah Sargent had a career high 21 points off five made three-pointers to elevate the Chargers. Junior Bryce Littler also continued his double-digit shooting streak with 19 and classmate Quynton Younker pitched in 12. The Chargers led nearly the entire way, with just one tie coming at 2-2. This is the first program victory for the Chargers over the Crusaders, after being defeated the previous two attempts by eleven points each.
Obert, who needed 29 points to break Jake Waddle’s record from 2005, got just enough with 30. Obert almost had to wait until today’s game at Paton-Churdan, but a steal in the final minutes left him an open lane and the final minute to put in the clinching layup. Obert pushes his career scoring total to 1,338 points.
The Chargers move to 3-5 on the season while the Crusaders drop to 5-3 overall. The Chargers will go for their program best fourth win of the season when they close out 2018 with a home contest against the I-35 Roadrunners.
