A wide assortment of Perry residents with one thing in common piled into La Poste Wednesday night, as the Perry Booster Club hosted “An Evening with Hawkeye Legends.”
The event was a fundraiser to benefit the Perry High School football program, and featured four famous University of Iowa football players: Chuck Long, Chuck Hartlieb, Lon Olejniczak, and Jason Olejniczak. The evening started with a ticketed meet and greet called “Huddle with the Hawks,” where attendees had the opportunity to ask the Hawkeye greats questions, get some pictures, and have memorabilia autographed. The guest of honor was Long, who was promoting his recently released biography, “Destined for Greatness.”
A free public event followed the meet and greet, and the audience had the privilege of hearing stories from the four players, as well as the voice of the Hawkeyes, Garry Dolphin. Dolphin moderated a question and answer session, which was followed by questions from the audience. The event concluded with a few giveaways, as well as an auction. Organizer Kurt Whiton presented a copy of “Destined for Greatness,” which had been autographed by Long, current Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz, and legendary Coach Hayden Fry. The book was donated by its author, Aaron Putze, with the auction funds going to the Bluejays football team. The winning bid was $450.
The event was organized by Whiton and Tiffany Olejniczak, and was attended by several members of the most recent Perry football team and Coach Matt Hardy.
