Home games played at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines by the Greene County varsity basketball teams resulted in two losses for the Rams on Tuesday night. Nevada swept the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference girl/boy doubleheader by scores of 47-10 in the girls’ game and 77-69 for the boys. Both contests were broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
Senior Trey Hinote suffered what appeared to be an ankle sprain of his “good” ankle with 53 seconds left in the third quarter of the boys’ game and did not return to the court. He had 22 points at the time of the injury and was playing in his third game in five days since missing two weeks due to a severely sprained right ankle. He hurt the left ankle on Tuesday.
Senior Lance Hughes scored a career best 31 points for Coach Chris Nelson’s team but it wasn’t enough to keep the Rams from dropping to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference. The Rams led by as many as 12 points in the contest, but a 27-point third quarter carried the Cubs to a 61-58 lead at the end of that stanza. The final margin was the largest margin of the game.
Nevada stopped a four game losing streak and improved to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in league play. Juniors Tyler Sansgaard with 31 points and Kody Kruschwitz with 23 lead the Cubs.
The girls’ game was all Cubs as Nevada led 11-0 after one quarter and 36-1 at intermission. The Rams did not score for the first 9:36 of playing time and did not collect their first field goal until 17:15 of game time had lapsed. Lily Muir had four points and Izzy Bravard scored three for the Rams. First year coach Tyler Westhoff’s team fell to 0-9 on the season and 0-6 in the HOIAC while Nevada improved to 4-7 and 3-3.
Kacie Rewerts had 14 points and Amanda Fortmann added 11 for the Cubs.
The Greene County girls won’t play again until early January. The Greene County boys host non-conference opponent Boone on Friday, Dec. 21 in the middle school gym in Jefferson at around 7:30 p.m. That game can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradiocom.
