For the first time this season the Greene County High School wrestling team is above the .500 mark in dual meets after going 3-0 Thursday night in Des Moines at Saydel High School. First year head coach Zach Beekman’s Rams started with a 65-12 victory over Heart of Iowa Activities Conference opponent Nevada. Next was a 58-12 win over non-conference opponent Coon Rapids-Bayard. The final dual of the night was against the host Eagles and Greene County trailed 31-28 with three weight classes remaining. Two falls and a forfeit produced a 46-31 HOIAC victory and a 2-1 league record. Overall, the Rams are 7-5 after starting the season at 1-4.
Forfeits were a big part of the night as the Rams collected free six-points 15 times while forfeiting just three times to the opposition.
Five Rams went 3-0 on the night. Making that list are Braden Gallagher (113), Brady Stauffer (138), Will Hansen (152), Brock Wuebker (170), and Sawyer Schiltz (220). Brenner Gallagher (106), Joe Davis (132), Cameron Miller (145), Joel Ward (160), and Matt Naberhaus (285) each went 2-1. Noble Hoyt (120) had just one match, but it was a win by fall.
The Rams host an Open House this Saturday the 15th from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the middle school gym in Jefferson. It’s a come and go event open to the public with a free will offering lunch.
