Often lost in the hubbub of the holiday season is the shortest day of the year, the Winter Solstice. However, this year Dallas County Conservation is celebrating the celestial waltz of the earth and sun with a Winter Solstice Sunrise Celebration.

On Friday, December 21st, Conservation invites people to get up bright and early to watch the sun crest over the eastern horizon, reminding everyone that it will not be disappearing to the south forever. The event will be held at Hanging Rock Conservation Area near Redfield, starting at 7 a.m. There will be a predawn bonfire, and attendees will be able to stand at the astronomical clock constructed with stones to meter the time. There is no cost to attend and registration is not required, though participants are reminded to dress for cold weather.
