The Greene County School Board agreed to pursue demolishing the vacant school building in Grand Junction.

The Board approved last month to put together bids to approve at their next regular meeting for the building to be demolished. The Board voted to close the building in November of 2016. They gave several options to the Grand Junction City Council of what they would like to see happen with the building and the property. The Council voted unanimously to have the building demolished in August of 2017.

Superintendent Tim Christensen says he’s working with a structural engineer for bid specs and holding a public hearing before the Board makes their decision at their next regular meeting. Christensen believes work on tearing the building down could happen as early as next month.

“The contractors that I’ve talked to, there’s a lot of them that need winter work. So it would be something that hopefully if winter was okay they should be able to get started on that in January. The goal would be maybe have it completely demolished by the end of May.”

Once the building is demolished, the City of Grand Junction would take ownership of the property from the school district.
