Work has begun on the first of two new houses in Perry that are being constructed by Dallas County Habitat for Humanity, and volunteers are needed through the rest of the week.
Dallas County Habitat Coordinator Omar Padilla says there are volunteer opportunities for Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, and there will likely be more before the end of the month. Padilla emphasizes that experience isn’t necessary to help out, but a desire to do some good is paramount. “We’re not asking professionals to come in and work. You don’t have to know a lot about what we’re doing. You just have to be willing to learn, willing to sweat a little, and follow instructions. We have professional staff on our team, who will lead volunteers.”
Padilla adds, his hope is to have the first house under a roof before the calendar turns to 2019, with the second one to follow at the beginning of next year. He says the City of Perry has been very helpful to Habitat and their future homeowners, particularly because of the tax abatement program. “Habitat is coming in and taking advantage of that encouragement from the City, and we will continue building. That’s our goal, that’s our mission, and we own five lots (in Perry). So this year two houses, hopefully next year, maybe another one, maybe two.”
