The Perry boys and girls basketball teams were both unsuccessful in their Raccoon River Conference opening games Friday night at Carroll. Neither game was close as the Jayettes lost 66-28 to the Tigers, while the Bluejays fell 84-15.
The girls team was led as usual by junior Molly Lutmer, who had 20 points in the game, though their star had some foul trouble in the first quarter. That allowed Carroll to jump out to an early lead they would not relinquish the entire game. The Jayettes trailed 27-9 after one, and the deficit climbed to 49-16 at halftime. Lutmer managed to score 12 of her 20 points in the second half, in spite of the running clock for the third and fourth quarters, and was the only Jayette to record a point after the break. The Tigers led 60-19 at the end of three quarters, and the game ended with a 66-28 loss.
The boys team struggled throughout the game against a talented Carroll team that got Perry’s leading scorer junior Muhamed Abdelnabi in early foul trouble that forced him to the bench for much of the night. The rest of the team struggled to find the bottom of the bucket, while the Tigers imposed their will on offense the whole game. Perry trailed 25-3 after one quarter, 55-10 at halftime, 72-12 at the end of the third, and the game ended at 84-15. Abdelnabi led the Bluejays with five points, which were all scored after halftime, and were the only points the team would score after the break.
The losses drop the Jayettes to 1-3 and the Bluejays to 0-2. Both teams will take the court again on Tuesday night at home against Dallas Center-Grimes. The doubleheader will be broadcast live on AM 1310, FM 99.7 KDLS, with pregame starting at 5:45 p.m.
