Perry Carnegie Library Museum

The Perry Hometown Heritage “Becoming American” program is wrapping up, and there is one more film study event coming this Monday.

The final event in the series will be held at the Carnegie Library Museum from 5-7 p.m., and Program Coordinator Alissa Whitmore says the topic will be “Immigration and Popular Culture.” “So we’re going to be looking at it in multiple different ways. So one of these is going to be how the media teaches newcomers how to be American. As well as the contributions of different immigrant groups to American popular culture.”

The film to be studied at the event is called “The Search for General Tso,” and discusses the influence of Chinese immigrants throughout America’s history, including the presence of Chinese-American restaurants in virtually every community across the nation. The discussion will be led by Drake University Professor Inbal Mazar, and there will be free appetizers provided by the Mandarin Cafe. There is no cost to attend and registration is not required.
