The future of wrestling in Guthrie County is bright as several contested matchups were on display at last night’s West Central Valley quadrangular. A pivotal coaching decision in the final dual paid off for Danker and the Chargers as they swept the field, defeating East Union, Nodaway Valley, and West Central Valley to start their dual schedule at 3-0. The Chargers breezed past East Union, 45-22 and Nodaway Valley, 55-18 to set up a showdown with the Wildcats, who also bested the Eagles and Wolverines, 57-18 and 51-30 respectively.

At the start of the dual with West Central Valley, junior heavyweight Rush Rowan was initially unopposed for the Wildcats, and would have claimed six points off a forfeit. But Danker moved sophomore Gage Buttler up from 220 pounds to wrestle with Rowan. That move paid off as Buttler flipped the script, pinning Rowan in 1:19 for a 12 point swing. After forfeits in three consecutive weight classes (106,113,120), WCV junior Justin Garcia took the 126 match over ACGC senior Blaine Beeler by a 14-5 Major Decision. Garcia’s four points cut the ACGC lead to eight.

Trading pins in 132 and 138 pound classes set up another pivotal matchup at 145 between ACGC senior Easton Benson and WCV sophomore Drew Belden. Benson pulled away from Belden in the later periods, securing the Major Decision and four points, 16-6. Senior Gabe Rowley sealed the deal for the gold and black at 152 pounds, with a pin at 2:22 over junior Brayden Miller. The Chargers finished with the 43-34 victory, with eight individual wins by forfeit, fall, or decision.

Both ACGC and WCV will have a quick turnaround as they compete in invitational tournaments on Saturday. The Chargers will see a familiar foe as they will compete in the Coach Riley Invitational at Nodaway Valley. The Wildcats will head west to compete in the Dan Hill Invitational at Harlan.
