Tomorrow, First Christian Church in Perry will be hosting a holiday meal to benefit the Perry Police Department’s Shop with a Cop program.
Starting at 5 p.m. tomorrow, the Church is holding their “Before the Turkey” soup supper, which will include soups, sides, drinks, and dessert for a free-will donation. All proceeds will go directly to the annual Shop with a Cop program, which pairs kids from low-income families with Perry Police Officers for a day of holiday shopping. Perry Police Chief Eric Vaughn says fundraisers such as this are a big help for the program, as the more money they get, the more kids and families they can help this year. “You know, the biggest thing is probably just word of mouth. Year after year we have a lot of the same donors. But the Perry Police Officers Association does kind of a letter campaign each year, and we distribute those to businesses and some individuals. And then those donations just kind of come rolling in, and we’ve just had great support over the last few years.”
Vaughn also reminds people they are still accepting nominations of kids to take part in Shop with a Cop this year. Nomination forms can be picked up at Perry Elementary or at the Public Safety Building, and they are due by November 30th. Vaughn says the actual shopping day will be in mid-December, and he’s hopeful they’ll have enough funds to invite 20-30 kids this year. Tomorrow’s fundraiser will be held at First Christian Church, located at the corner of Lucinda and 3rd streets in downtown Perry.
