A move by an e-cigarette company to help curb what many are calling an epidemic, may certainly help a similar trend in Jefferson.
Juul Labs announced last week that they would suspend sales of most of its flavored e-cigarette pods in retail stores and discontinue its social media advertising. Juul is the manufacturer of a vaping device that contains nicotine, which can’t be possessed by anyone under the age of 18. However, several minors in the Greene County School District have been caught and disciplined, as well as cited by the Jefferson Police Department, due to being in possession of the devices.
Police Chief Mark Clouse doesn’t believe that minors were trying to purchase the devices or the oils from retailers, but that they were getting them through individuals who were of legal age. Clouse says by taking away that availability, he thinks it’ll help to turn the current trend.
“Quite frankly the kids aren’t going to be interested in the straight tobacco tasting one, or the menthol one, or something like that, for those of us who have smoked and understand those flavors. They’re attracted to and interested in the berry tasting and pineappley good flavored stuff and it’s readily available now at any convenience store in town.”
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently reported that 3.6 million people under the age of 18 have used e-cigarettes. The FDA announced earlier this year it wanted to ban flavored e-cigarette pods.
