It’s been a week since the life of Redfield resident Lerynne West changed forever, after she won the biggest jackpot in Iowa lottery history.

The 51-year-old West had the winning Powerball numbers, earning her half of the record pot of more than $600 million. Her $343.9 million prize resulted from a ticket she purchased at the Casey’s General Store in Redfield, which in turn earns a $10,000 bonus for selling a winning ticket. West said she bought the ticket with her sister while she was getting some pizza at the convenience store, following a long day of moving into her new home. She then proceeded to leave the ticket on the floor of her sister’s truck, which was driven back to Winterset.

After hearing news that a winning ticket had been sold at the Redfield Casey’s, West searched for her ticket before realizing where she left it. She called her sister who sent her a picture of her numbers, which West then checked with the Iowa Lottery’s website. She says for several minutes she was sure she had been entering the numbers incorrectly. “So I kept going back and forth between the picture and the IALottery.com, and when I realized that I hadn’t done my numbers wrong, I told my sister to get in her truck and get that ticket and get up here right now! And I said, ‘And drive slow!’”

On Monday, with winning ticket in hand, West headed to the Iowa Lottery headquarters to collect her winnings. She elected to receive a lump sum of $140.6 million after taxes, as opposed to an annuity of the whole prize, paid incrementally. She plans to purchase a new car and take a few trips with her prize, though most of it will go to a newly created foundation in memory of her late grandson. The Callum Foundation will provide grants with a goal of alleviating poverty and hunger, as well as funding education, animal welfare, and veterans affairs. West added, being a jackpot winner was something she can’t believe she can call herself. “I never thought I would. I have always dreamed about it, but deep down I never really thought that it would happen.”

The jackpot was split with another winning ticket purchased in New York City, though the second winner has not yet come forward.
