On the heels of the best season in program history, one of Panorama’s senior volleyball players made a college commitment to the sport Friday morning. A small gathering of friends and family watched as Brooke Halterman put pen to paper, signing a letter of intent to join the Southwestern Iowa Community College (SWICC) Spartans Women’s Volleyball team next fall. The Raccoon Valley Radio Network was in attendance for the signing and spoke with Halterman afterward about her college choice. “It feels really good,” Halterman said, “I’m not stressing about the whole trying to find a college thing. When I decided to go to SWICC, I just knew I wanted to.”
Halterman chose SWICC over offers from Des Moines Area Community College, Marshalltown Community College, and Cloud County Community College of Concordia, Kansas. Also in attendance for Halterman’s signing was Southwestern Iowa Community College head volleyball coach Casey Quiggle. Quiggle shared with Raccoon Valley Radio his reasons for offering Halterman a scholarship. “In southwest Iowa, I’ll admit it’s a little hard to recruit some height,” Quiggle said, “Seeing that she was taller and could play the middle (block) was a nice benefit. I think she moves really quickly laterally, has a good block, and a good arm swing.”
Halterman, a first-team All-West Central Activities Conference player this fall, tallying a team-high 239 kills,121 digs, and 56 blocks during Panorama’s 17-12 campaign. The Raccoon Valley Radio Network will share interviews with Halterman and Quiggle on the next Wahl McAtee Tire and Service Center Guthrie County PM Sports Page, Monday night at 6 p.m. on True Country K 107.9.
