Communities in Greene County will be celebrating their respective citywide Beggars’ Nights tonight and tomorrow night. With that in mind, Jefferson Police Chief Mark Clouse has a few safety reminders for those looking to participate in trick-or-treating.

Clouse says motorists should be alert when driving during the designated Beggars’ Night times and be watchful of young kids in costumes out with their families trick-or-treating. He recommends trick-or-treaters visit all of the participating houses on one side of the block, then cross at the intersection, and do all of the houses on the other side. He also advises to only go to the houses that are well lit. Clouse adds for parents and guardians to inspect their child’s candy before they eat any of it.

“Make sure there’s no opened packages and that type of thing. I know we’re a small community and it takes a village to raise these young ones, and that’s what we practice here in Greene County. But there are still bad things that happen in the world. So pay attention to what they have in their bag and if there’s something questionable in there, throw it in the garbage.”
